In Thantaunggyi Township, Lotho City, within Karen state, the president of the Save The Trees Rescue Team (STTRT) shared a heartbreaking story with CJ Platform about a woman from LanKu village. This expectant mother, who was escaping conflict, faced unimaginable loss during childbirth, including her life and that of one of her children.

On the evening of Friday, March 29, the expectant mother, who was pregnant with quadruplets, experienced a premature delivery while trying to find safety amidst regional hostilities. The situation was dire as she was unable to access any medical facilities in the city for assistance.

“Being pregnant with quadruplets and lacking adequate nutrition was a significant challenge. Escaping the conflict made it impossible to seek hospital care in time, leading to a desperate situation where she had to deliver with minimal assistance. Unfortunately, she managed to give birth to three of her children, but the fourth could not be delivered, resulting in the tragic loss of the mother and that child,” Ko Kyaw Thura explained to CJ Platform.

Kyaw Thura also disclosed that one of the triplets died on March 31, just two days after birth, due to inadequate healthcare.

“The health and well-being of the two surviving infants are our top concerns. We are making efforts to ensure that the necessary medical examinations are provided for the family of the deceased mother. They have been moved from their war-torn area to Taung Ngu Hospital and are scheduled to be transferred to Yanking Children’s Hospital for further care,” Ko Kyaw Thura added.

Following the 2021 coup d’état in Myanmar, the conflict has intensified, marked by clashes between the military council and rebel groups, along with the military’s extensive aerial bombings. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA Myanmar) has reported that the conflict has displaced over 3.2 million people, with a total of 17.6 million in need of humanitarian aid.
